Today we have some helpful information that may help clear up questions you may have pertaining to the parts inside of a plasma television.
The Brain of the TV. It controls all the TVs functions and signals. Typically the board that contains all of the input connections such as HDMI, VGA, and/or components inputs. This board processes all video and audio signals that are applied to the inputs. It contains the software needed to process and transmit the signals to other boards in the TV so that an image on the screen can be present. The main unit is also responsible for activating the Power Supply when a command is sent to the TV to power on via power button or remote.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Main Unit: No HDMI, no sound, no image on the screen, powers down randomly, no image from tuner / just snow (black and white static) on the screen.

The Power Supply, also known as the PSU, is responsible for supplying power to all other boards, components and the display panel. The Power Supply Board’s main job is to convert the 110V AC power coming from an outlet into usable DC power for the TV. It typically generates many different DC Voltages depending on the requirements of other boards and components in the TV. Generally when the TV is off the power supply will have a 5V DC signal going to the Main Unit. When the power button is pushed the Main Unit will put a load on the 5V line which tells the power supply to turn on. Some standard Voltages created are 5V for standby, Va voltage for the sustain units which are normally around 60V, Vs voltage which is also for the sustain units normally between 180V and 205V, and also other lower DC Voltages for separate components.
Warning: A Power Supply in a plasma television generates dangerous levels of electricity. Do not touch them while the TV is on or connected to an outlet. Only take voltage readings if you are aware of what you are doing. A Power Supply can also hold a charge when the TV is off and not connected to an outlet so be cautious when handling these boards and always pick them up from the edges.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Power Supply: Television won’t power on, takes an extended amount of time to power on, randomly powers off after a while, pixels flashing on the screen.

Logic Boards, also known as Control Boards, or T-Con Boards are responsible for processing the signal that is created by the main unit. The signal comes from the Main Unit into the Logic Board. It is then transmitted from the Logic Board to the buffer boards and the Y-Sustain unit.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Logic Board: Half the display is not working, has sound but no image, vertical and horizontal lines on the screen.

Also referred to as the address buffers. Its a midpoint area that a signal can be held before being applied to the panel.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Buffer Board: Vertical lines on the panel or a blacked out vertical portion of the screen.

Responsible for providing the electrical charge needed to illuminate the screen. The Va and Vs voltages are applied to provide the energy required to power the panel. Signals are sent from the Logic Board to the Y Sustain to control the Y-axis of the panel.
Sometimes called the Z Sustain. The opposite of the Y sustain. Used to discharged the energy that is going through the panel. The X Sustain provides a negative electrical charge to attract the positive charge that was given from the Y Sustain board. Signals are sometimes sent from the Logic Board to the X Sustain to control the X-axis of the panel.

Y Buffer Board
Also referred to as a driver board. Sometimes this board will be split into two separate boards. The Y Buffer drives signals coming from the Y Sustain directly to the individual lines on the panel.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Y Sustain, Y Buffer, and X Sustain: negative image, flashing pixels, dark image, has sound but no image, vertical colored lines on screen.
Y Sustain and Y Buffer: If a Y buffer or Y driver board test bad and needs to be replaced it is recommended to replace the Y Sustain board also. A bad Y Sustain board can damage a newly installed Y buffer board, If the Y buffer boards test good and the Y sustain board tests bad then it is recommended to only replace the Y sustain. Be aware a bad Y Sustain unit can cause a Y Buffer to fail.
Plasma Panel: Some problems that occur with a plasma television may in fact not be related to any of the boards. The approximate lifespan of most recent plasma’s display panels range between 60,000 and 100,000 hours and over that period of time the screen will gradually lose brightness and vibrancy.
Common Symptoms of a bad panel: Image retention (Burn-in), Vertical lines 2-4 inches wide (bad ribbon connection), flashing red dots, colored vertical lines, flashing colored dots.
